Northern Flickers are a treat to welcome to the garden....and when they "look after" some of the ants in the lawn, even more so!!
Both May & June...and beyond, are busy months for babies around the garden! Bunnies have been numerous of late while many Robins have fledged their nests and are being observed around our yard! Other fledglings are around as well. These creatures spend much time on or near the ground....feeding from the ground.
It seems that we just welcomed May..and now here it is June!! We've had some extreme heat the past while so we definitely now need some moisture for the crops and gardens! June started off so very pleasant as we welcomed many Cedar Waxwings to our garden...as per usual we heard them before we saw them!! Listen for their unique sound; you may not realize it belongs to these beautiful birds!
Worried that the backyard birding item that you have wanted forever will be sold out? Looking for something that we don't have in stock right now, but we did at one time? Looking for something that you've never seen here but are wondering about? In all cases, please don't be afraid to ask!!
While sometimes a wild bird item may be sold out and is no longer available, this doesn't really happen too much. We've mentioned this before, but thought it was worth repeating....we place orders quite often from our wild bird suppliers, so chances are, if you are looking for something, we can have it within a few days!!
For instance, should your nectar feeder get broken or damaged by the elements, or the critters in your garden, it shouldn't be a problem for you to find a replacement on our shelves since we do keep these in stock throughout the summer and beyond! If not, we will see if our suppliers have it so that we can order it for you!
So once again, please don't hesitate to ask...you just never know!!
As the heat of July continues in this last week of May, there's even more of a need for fresh, cool water...for all!
Take care everyone...and take care OF everyone!
Enjoy your Monday and have a great week!!
It can be pretty amazing the selection of birds you might see using a bird bath, a fountain...or just using a shallow dish of water!
A reminder - if the water you are offering isn't moving, change it often.
We have bird baths available along with other ways of offering water to wildlife.
Temperatures are expected to warm up this week and are already very warm in many parts of the country! It is a time when you will find more birds enjoying the water you can offer whether it be in a bird bath, fountain, pond or just a simple flat dish. Everyone needs water...make certain to change or freshen it often, especially if it is "standing" or still...it will become a spot that mosquitoes will use so must be changed very often!! Drop by to see our selection of bird baths & other ways to offer water!
We are closed today, Monday, May 21 but will be back to regular hours Tuesday, May 22!! In the meantime, have a great day, a great holiday!!
Many of our feathered friends continue to work on their nests while others are busy feeding their young! We've been watching work on a Baltimore Oriole nest as other bird species also complete their nests, are sitting on eggs or are busy with their newly-hatched chicks! As always, we have nesting products available (scroll for pics)!
If you currently have the gorgeous Rose-breasted Grosbeaks visiting your garden, are you attracting them with Safflower Seed....they really do love it!! A bonus of this seed is that some other birds generally do not care for it providing more spots at the feeders for those who do...for not only the Grosbeaks, but also the Northern Cardinals! Have a great week leading up to the holiday weekend!!
We all know how watching the birds makes us feel! We all know that we love to set up feeders, add water features, offer the best & freshest products...all in an attempt to attract & welcome the beautiful birds to our yards & gardens! In the end, "Watching Birds Near Your Home Is Good For Your Mental Health"...a fantastic column!!

The amazing Ruby-throated Hummingbirds finally arrived in our garden yesterday!! If you weren't aware, Hummingbirds will use both an orange-coloured "oriole" feeder and/or a red hummingbird feeder...hence the reason we encourage you to only use clear nectar for the good health of all birds, not just the Hummingbirds!! And, depending on the style of your Hummingbird feeder, Orioles will often use these as well! With so many nectar-loving birds in our area, perhaps MOM could use an extra feeder in her garden!!?? Check out our superb selection if a new or additional nectar feeder is on your Mother's Day list!
We were very excited to once again welcome Indigo Buntings to our garden on Sunday, May 6 2018!! This beauty made several appearances yesterday while we sat close by watching as he took several swoops through the feeders, finally landing at his favourite....the one with White Millet & Nyjer Seed!! We are offering these two seeds in our Droll Yankees Seed Feeder...they love it!!
This Friday, May 4 has brought some very windy conditions as a cold front is about to move through the area. These conditions are not great for your bird feeders, especially those with nectar (spillage) and seed feeders could be damaged as they swing in the wind or they may lose seed. Extreme care needed this afternoon and in to the evening for anyone spending time out of doors!
Just a short time ago, "our" first Baltimore Oriole of the 2018 Migration Season arrived!! If you've been holding off filling & placing your feeders, NOW is definitely the time to do it...they will be searching for their favourite food sources & spots to make their nests!!
Migration Update - "Our" first Rose-breasted Grosbeak of the season arrived in our garden this evening!! These guys are some of the most fun to welcome around the feeders & around the yard. And just so you know, they LOVE Safflower Seed!! Stop by our location at 1830 Gainsborough Road, London to stock up!
Sing it really loud....It's May, It's May, It's May!! May is such an awesome month...Buds & Blossoms will be bursting with the best colours; Birds are singing with so much joy and are on the move as nesting season will be in full swing; The earth will be warming & planted bringing plenty of satisfaction and great cheer!! Wishing everyone a fabulous month of May!!
With Hummingbirds reported in Ontario, it is the perfect time to get your feeders out, if you haven't already, as well as a good way to 'convince' them to nest in your vicinity! It is also the BEST to time remind everyone to offer CLEAR NECTAR ONLY! Please, for the health and safety of the birds, do not offer any kind of nectar containing colour. The colours of your feeders, along with your blooms & blossoms, will bring the Hummingbirds (and Orioles) to your garden. As well, there should be no colouring in the nectar that you put in your Oriole Feeders. There is no way to prevent Hummingbirds from using an oriole feeder and vice versa....colouring isn't really good for anyone, let alone the birds so the best practice is to err on the side of caution! Please also remember to change your nectar often and keep feeders clean & fresh! Thank you for giving these beauties a helping hand while also enjoying their splendor!!
